In spite of the Israeli atrocities, I ask all the Palestinians to keep hopeful in the realisation of a really independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and in the respect of the right of return of the Palestinian refugees.

The two people Israeli and Palestinians do have a common interest, that of long term peace and security. The two people should be allies rather than enemies.. It is necessary to introduce a wedge between the Israeli people and its criminal leadership. On the other hand, Palestinian should help in the demystification of the Israeli people.
The suicide bombers are actually doing what Sharon hoped they would do. Hamas should not hijack the Palestinian agenda. The future lies in a cessation of inimity between the two people. The future is pointed at by the RefusenikIsraeli who would not serve in the occupied territories, and by Palestinians Like Hanan Asgrawi whose wisdom should point to a better leadership in the future.
Just now, Arafat is to be defended as the recognised and elected leader.

I would like to predict that Sharon will pay for his crimes. There willo be a new Nuremberg for him and his likes.

my heart is with the people of Ramallah and all the occupied territories. believe it or no, there are Americans who know the Israeli occupation is a terrible injustice, and know our own government's complicity in it. there are simply not enough of us. I too first heard of Adam Shapiro from the pages of Ha'aretz magazine, which was very informative, although we do receive Huwaida Arraf's [PALSOLIDARITY] letters. It is ironic and tragic that people of peace, and a man of peace, like Adam Shapiro, would be so basely condemned of being in any way comparable to John Walker Lindh. The disgusting rumors trying to link him to everything from support of suicide bombers to converting to Islam (the conversion to Islam not necessarily being bad, but aligning him, in the eyes of many with the world of newly converted Islamic extremists, a small population with the large publicity of John Walker Lindh) are unfortunate, and display the total incomprehension of his opponents of Adam's mission. Anyway, why would he convert to his Islam. His fiancee is a Christian.
Anyway, I am very supportive of his actions.

The tragedy of Israel is that it was founded on illusions relevant to one's faith and a lack of reality on the ground. The early pioneers did not foresee the intractable problems they would leave their descendants, which is where the tragedy comes to play. The tragedy of the Palestinians stems from their inability to accept these new comers over time and perhaps influence their future. Violence has never solved Israel's problems. They have humiliated the Arabs in combat and the Palestinians became the victims. While the world over has acknowledged the terror and horror of jewish persecusion, especially notable in the Holocaust, the Palestinians have fared terribly in their plight. The escalation of desperate acts will not truly solve the problems of anyone, no matter what belief system is behind such acts. Israel, for better or for worse is a nation in our modern times, and the Palestinians must live in dignity and freedom in a small nation of their own. Justice must be served or else all the lives that have been lost and the gaping wounds of the Palestinians, Arabs and the Holocaust will never heal. The settlements must go as a very small price the Israelies with radical ideas of history should pay. God is not a real estate broker and the promises often repeated in biblical terms cannot truly be served. Ultimate peace will only happen when Israel becomes a part of that end of the world far removed from it's colonial origins. We as Americans have always prized the Israeli pioneering spirit as a reflection of our own. We called our native "savages" they refer to the natives as "terrorists" if they resist. Israel should be a part of the world there and not an alien presence. Tolerance becomes less the issue as opposed to acceptance. They are indeed a minority in that end of the world that should be protected, but NOT by force, but by acceptance. That should be the end result. The fear that Israel lose it's Jewish flavor would be unfounded as jews can practice their faith freely as citizens of the area. Modern Israel should be a nationality rather merely a place to protect jews who would persecuted. Perhaps one day the jews that originated from various Arab countries can return to their place of origin rather than remain in a smaller country. The trade off is greater to move freely. This scenario will not happen anytime soon, but is indeed possible. The Palestinians do not have to continue to pay the price of jewish persecusion, Arab and regional politics. The question is: Are the Israelies brave enough to fight for a real place or continue to be a fortress?

Mr. Shapiro is a unique individual. He is motivated by the human spirit to live as a human being more than as a national or one who uses faith and a system of beliefs as a weapon to enslave people. I admire him greatly and wish that many more like him live in our midst as HUMAN BEINGS. One is never the master of where they are born or who their parents were. The tragic plight of this generation of Israelies and Palestinians is that they inhereted their parents intractable problems. Peace will come when the human spirit will overtake the tribalism of nationality and religion. Mr. Shapiro, you are an excellent example to all. Stay true and stay safe. This Arab friend understands what you are doing.

As long as people like Adam Shapiro, Noah Salameh (Palestinian Center for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation), and Ami Isserof (Israeli Peace movement) exist, the bullies, crazies and criminals won't succeed in destroying hope. Sharon, Netanyahu and the leaders of Hamas can try as much as they want, but their brutish arrogance won't pay. As for Bush, I'm ashamed, as an American, to have a president who speaks of morality and justice but unconditionally supports and arms a brutal oppressor against a much maligned people.

Bloody photos. A shame but what do people think happens to children whose parents deliberately live in a war zone with the intent to give birth to offspring who will die in such horrible ways. I am very proud of you too. I am half Palestinians half Jewish (shapiro too!!). I lived with my Palestinian family in Hebron and I witnessed a lot of the evils done to the Palies. I came back to the USA to finish high school and go to college. I am going to start college this August and I cant wait to finish so that I can go and do what you do. I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor and working in the refugee camps, jsut doing anything to help the Palestinians.
