What the IDF is doing now is deplorable. I cant help but make a fist as i read about the injuries incurred by the international protestors. I also cannot forget the suicide bombings and the innocents that have died. There is no excuse for killing men women and children as they have. If the Palestinians fundamentalists attacked soldiers, policemen and government buildings then that would be entirely different. If the exrtremist groups wanted international support then they should attack the direct oppressors themselves, not the defenseless population. I too have been troubled by the suicide bombings. They are horrible grisly acts that make me sick to my stomach.

But "condemnation" really has little meaning. For 20 years the Palestinians lived meekly under military occupation with non-violent marches and protests, but no one paid the least bit of attention. And when the first intifada broke out it was stones and the occasional molotov cocktail against Israeli occupation forces (which didn't prevent Israeli troops from shooting down hundreds of kids). And now the second intifada, where the some Palestinians are lightly armed. Yet the occupation and all its daily violence and humiliation has continued unabated: 35 years now.

The new tactic of suicide bombings is the result of sheer desperation, of powerless people who see no future, and who decide to sacrifice themselves along with their victims. They are beyond our condemnation, for they have given up in the face the daily destruction and domination wreaked by Israel upon their lives and families. Their only hope is to visit upon Israel a taste of what they have suffered their entire lives. By systematically denying them any other viable form of struggle and robbing them of a future, Israel and the United States have cornered the Palestinians and practically forced them to resort to suicide bombings. And some have, and will continue to oblige them.

So the well-intentioned scale-weighing that you show is really meaningless: to compare the situation of the Palestinians, who cannot so much as walk down the street safely (or stay in their homes either) , with "disagreeing with/opposing the government" is pathetic. It reflects a lackadaisacal disregard for the grave reality the Palestinians live with every minute of every day.

I am not "justifying" the suicide bombings. I merely seek to understand what could drive someone to do something like that. It's not the same as merely killing: remember they are SUICIDE bombers

But the bottom-line fact is that if Israel were to withdraw from the occupied territories, the bombings would stop.

How could the Israeli citizens be so 'innocent'. They live, we are told, in a democracy. As such, they are free to elect their leaders. These elected leaders are acting on their behalf and they could at anytime recall them. They purposely elected Sharon to take care of the Palestinians which in fact he is doing.

I agree entirely with your view. The PLA does not condone killing women and children, but does condone the killing of Israeli troopps and other members if Israeli illegal occupation and oppression regime. Any civilian is an unfortunate collateral causalty that should be avoided at all costs.

This is the view I have repeatedly stressed to the Palestinians and it is shared by the leadership, although not by all individuals. Leve en masse who take up arms through whatever means possible to oppose the repression violate domestic law, but there actions cannot be attributed to the PA.

I agree that suicide bombings are counter-productive. Even if we leave aside the moral questions for a minute, they are bad for the Palestinians. With suicide bombings, the average Israeli living within the 1967 borders feels that he or she is a target, and grows angry and more right-wing. If the Palestinians instead attacked only the IDF and the settlers, the Israeli peaceniks would have an easier time convincing the public (as they are trying to) that this is a war for the settlements. Maybe the Israeli public would begin to support a pull-out if they saw that this war was not for their own defense, but for the defense of a bunch of extremist settlers. But as long as there are attacks within the 1967 borders, the Israeli left will have a hard time gaining any influence over the hardliners, which can only be bad for both Israel and Palestine.

That said, I of course also condemn all the IDF's recent actions. The right-wingers in Israel are clearly wrong and immoral. But I think that the Palestinians too should use a bit of realpolitik in their resistance to try to encourage left-wing Israelis to come to power -- the people inside the 1967 borders should not be the enemy; those outside the borders and other instruments of the occupation should be clearly marked as the targets.

We have arrived at Ayida camp. I have been delegated spokesperson,
a responsibility I am carrying gravely. I got in a car, and saw the
fresh bullethole in the front windshield, level with my chin.

The driver motioned with his cigarette: "You see what happened
today in Ayida?"

I gulp my tea even though the heat burns my throat, and we move
into the central room, sitting on the floor, away from the windows.
I think all four of us internationals hold our breath as the firing
continues. It seems so close. Our hosts are cautious but not
panicked. Elizabet begins to cry beside me. I wish I could, but
adrenaline is taking over. On the news, we learn of the casualties
from the latest bomb in Tel Aviv. The gunshots and automatic rifles
feel just outside the window. Our host passes out individual
ashtrays like pitas. I join the smokers because I don't know what
else to do. Two of the internationals are only 18. I remind
everyone to breathe, and then realize that I'm holding my own breath.
Our host says, "all the time we are afraid. It could be
tomorrow." He is 34 years old, just 6 years older than myself. His
face is weary with the responsibility of constantly protecting his
family, and he seems grateful to smile whenever we can. He tells us
of the bedrooms that he built upstairs for his children. "They cannot
sleep there," he says, shaking his head. "Because it is unsafe?" We
ask. "No, because they were destroyed." "Oh." He promises to show us
in the morning, and for a moment all I can see is the sad father, the
husband, the provider who cannot build an extension on his house or
install new windows because they are immediately destroyed. We are
silent for a moment.
"The war is coming," he whispers.
In the midst of all the sobriety there is a knocking on the
bathroom door. It turns out that Elizabet has accidently locked
herself in the bathroom. Our hosts smile. We smile. Then we all
begin laughing. Before I know it I am laughing as hard as I have
ever laughed, as if the locked bathroom door is the funniest thing I
have ever seen. I know that if I were to stop laughing I would begin
to cry.

Isreal is justified in retailiating against government sponsered attacks against their populace, but not in the way they are doing it. Sounds like the troops where trying to get the news to leave so the real shooting could start.

A couple things could be happening.

The troops could be overzelous and very angry at protestors that they percive as telling them that they are war criminals because they are defending themselves. (This does NOT justify what they did)

They could have been trying to clear the area of protestors so they could stage some sort of operation like helicopter landings or supply deliveries or somthing far more sinister.

I watch and observe this current crisis with growing unease and anxiety . Events have spiraled into savage and uncontrolled violence and the scary thing is both sides seeem to want more . Hardly a Palestinian or Israeli seems to wants a normal life free of violence , anger and seething animosity .Fight Fight Fight .
Being an African who lived in Israel and traveled the Islamic world extensivly I would like to know what is the real reason for all this pointless killing and destruction . Is it Realplolitik at its brutal worst practised by IDF, ochestratedby Sharon and sanctioned by the West with Palestinian suicide/sewerage-pipe bombers adding to the tradegy . Or is it a simple case of a lack of land and water among to few people .
The battleground of the haves vs the have nots .
Lets face it Palestine is not a economically viable state on its own , smashed infrastructure , economicaly dependent on surrounding states and geographicaly segregated . Even as a state foreign aid would serve little purpose in that environmanet and no sensible investor would pass up a developing country investment for one in a state on the brink of war .
Will the children of Israel who are given all oppotunities and have the gifts and blessings that many previous generations never had be condemed to perpetual war . The other day I was watching news showing Jenin and destroyment that Isrelis soldiers have done, and cowrd soldiers standing near their tanks pointing to children and women, my 6 year old daughter asked me, who are these soldiers and why they are diong this. When I explained to her that these are Isrealis soldiers who does this, she asked the name of the country again and then said: Isreal is the worst country in the world, and then next she told me that she wished the others, Palestiniens had the same kind of guns so that they could kick them back.
